Hello guys! Hope everything is well and safe with you 🙂

Once again I want to say how much I appreciate the interactions with me and the other forum members.

Now I have a new input for you about something that is matching technology and pandemic these days: the use of data from big players to help public authorities for monitoring the respect of the rules about lockdown. This opens issues related to public health, to public safety and to privacy. Many have raised the privacy topic over the last few years, but what is different in this situation? Why they should, or should not, use those information? This opens many scenarios, even because we do not know what will happen after the pandemic and how our everyday lives will be.

Hi guys! I appreciate a lot the way you are taking part in this forum and I like the links you make among different topics, this stimulates the debate and expands even more our considerations about technology, social issues and what happens in the Silicon Valley environment.

The environment built up in the Bay Area is the engine that helped innovation to emerge more and more over the last few years: technological innovation is boosted by the research done in universities, as well as research done by big corporations capable to recruit clever minds and relentless workers; many startups cultivating new approaches to realize solutions for today’s issues. Moreover, incubators and accelerators in the valley are often critical in helping young startups to be reliable and captive for the market. Nevertheless, what is essential is capital, coming from venture capital, business angels, big companies or crowdfunding and a strong entrepreneurial mentality. It is like a huge vital hub with million activities going on. You can feel it in the air. 🙂

Here is an interesting article: https://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/061115/why-silicon-valley-startup-heaven.asp

Since it seems very hard to replicate the exact model of Silicon Valley elsewhere, which could be according to you a good model to be applied in Italy, or in Europe? How our country can exploit its resources to boost startups/companies’ innovation, social success and market success?

Welcome Davide, nice to meet you and thanks for your comment! Since you are studying at Politecnico di Torino, try to visit the following link at the PoliTo forum for the Silicon Valley Study Tour 2020 🙂 https://www.siliconvalleystudytour.com/forums/topic/poli-to-silion-valley-2020/

Going back to our previous discussion about reliable information, here you guys can find an article about WhatsApp fighting misinformation: https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/21/whatsapp-search-web-coronavirus/ .

Many stimulating links Nicholas! I am now working in the telco industry and I see these phenomena going on. A big question now in the tech and telco industries is: how do we imagine the world after this emergency? Which habits will change? How this sudden change will influence our society and our way of doing daily things?

I add this article by World Economic Forum where you can find suggestions about interactions between companies and the society in this particular moment 😉 https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/03/coronavirus-and-corporate-social-innovation/

    Hello everybody!

First, I would like to thank all of you for the amazing stories shared about the application of technology in different fields. Honestly, this has been an opportunity for me to learn many new things and I have been passionate about reading your posts!

It is amazing to discover how technology is applied to our everyday life 😉

Reflecting on the difficult period we are going through, technology is supporting us under many aspects. Some of you mentioned different ways through which technology helps us in shortening distances, making people feel closer. Moreover, tech is supporting schools, universities and companies, to overcome issues: think about some software tools like Skype or Zoom. On the other hand, this boosts us to change and learn new approaches and methodologies.

I recently read this Deloitte’s article “Social Distancing for COVID-19: Learning Technology to the Forefront”: I think this could be interesting as it gives some starting points for our reflections on technology. https://capitalhblog.deloitte.com/2020/03/19/social-distancing-for-covid-19-learning-technology-to-the-forefront/#more-9908

What do you think? How are you activating your learning during these days? How do you think innovation can help us in this moment and how our habits will change after an intense use of online technologies like this?

A big welcome to everybody! Thanks for introducing you, I believe we will have many stimulating discussions in this forum 😉 so let’s start!

I would like to begin from your point of view about technology. Specifically, I am asking you to share a past experience of yours in which you have been fascinated about the application of technology.

I tell you mine 🙂 I remember my first experience in the Amazon Go shop in San Francisco: I had heard rumors about it, but it was my first time in a real store like that. I was surprised to see a lot of cameras and sensors able not only to monitor the correct behavior of customers, but also (very likely) to track useful information about what customers like and dislike in order to enhance the customer experience.

Now guys tell me your experience…who’s next?

Thanks Nicholas and thanks Giovanni for sharing many examples with us! Welcome Giuseppe, we are glad you have joined this forum 🙂

Now I want to change the topic again, even though it is new and real nowadays. Newspapers talk a lot about it, but I want to talk about Covid-19 differently, using this forum to share opinions about how technological advancement can help in situations like this: smart working, for example, is helping a lot many companies and workers.

The epidemic expansion is changing a little bit our habits. Since we have many opportunities brought about by technological potential, how would you use technology in this particular case? How might innovation improve our lives or helping us to overcome this situation? Free your creativity!

I would like to start a discussion in which you do not only share your idea, but you also discuss your points of view with the other guests in a positive way 😉

It seems you both are explaining the importance of education on information, and that seems fair to me. Most of it is related on how much a person wants to discover the news’ level of reliability and how much someone is willing to compare info among different sources. Moreover, the effort is in understand which sources are more solid than others, and this may change over time. Nevertheless, sources of information (social networks included) themselves should be aware of their role in spreading news and have a closer control of what is shared, for example certifying verified news with a with a logo (like in instagram verified profiles for instance).

A new topic now: what do you think about new trends of digital-physical customer experience? Have you ever heard the “Phygital” concept? Big companies like Amazon are thinking about that and how to change clients impression. Could this concept be used also for users of other products or services? Do you think innovation is only related to products or also to how products/services are distributed and perceived?

You can find some articles below 😉

Thanks for sharing your opinion with us Nicholas! The example of Cambridge Analitica you mentioned is one of the most famous cases over the last few years, and it is impressive how social networks information influenced people’s point of view.

Since you said our brain is constantly in “energy saving mode”, and often people want easy/fast information on traditional channels, how would you engage people with real news? Sites like WikiNews or WikiTribunal are punctual but not very known/used everywhere till now. How would you make people rely only on real data/information?

What about @Ardalan, @Matteo and @Giovanni? What do you think about this topic and about what Nicholas shared with us? How can technology be used, today or in the future, to challenge disinformation?

Thanks @ardalan and welcome in this forum @nicholas! I appreciate your ideas about these general topics and listen to your different viewpoints.

This time I want to know your opinion about the dynamics of information spreading across the internet and mainly through social networks. Over the past few years we’ve seen fake news spreading in particular moments, even in these days. Which is the role of social networks/social media on that? Here is an article on information spreading about coronavirus (https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51337357) just as an example, but the discussion is much wider.

The influence of this can be very important for many aspects of how people behave and face their challenges every day, it is not a joke.

Do you remember some cases in the past when social media and/or fake news gained the upper hand? Which is your opinion about it? How would you solve this problem?

Hi Giovanni! Welcome to this forum dedicated to the amazing experience of SVST 2020 and thanks for sharing with us your point of view.

According to what you guys said till now, I’d like to share an entrepreneurial story that describes some SV’s facets. It gives an idea about the high number of possibilities offered in the Bay Area. Moreover, it shows how a founder changed his perspective, failed and has grown after all.

    https://www.wired.com/story/he-wanted-unicorn-got-sustainable-business/

There are many success stories, but if you had the chance to risk and challenge yourself following your entrepreneurial spirit in an environment where almost everything is possible, what would you do?

Great perspective Matteo, your closing involves an interesting question!

Now I would like to move the discussion forward, talking about Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Many companies in different industries are thinking about how to develop their best format to exploit technological development in this field.

What do you think about these topics? How do you imagine the future with applications of these new technologies? How can they affect our everyday life or companies’ actions?

Here is an interesting video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwsrzCVZAb8 . Have fun and let me know!
