Hey LIUC group, happy to meet you! Here a cool topic.

Psychologist Michal Kosinski- now Stanford Professor,  developed a method to analyze people in minute detail based on their Facebook activity. Did a similar tool help propel Donald Trump to victory?

Two reporters from Zurich-based Das Magazin went data-gathering. Read this story…just a beginning of an Era.

    Hi everyone, I’m Sofia.

About the article, I can argument that, like Paolo said, big data are “just the beginning of a new era”. Every day we talk unconditionally about big data, we are surrounded of data and especially in our field of studies they became the way to simplify every process and to make our job easier. We are native of the “digital era” and we are used to exploit every opportunity that the technology gives us. I cannot think about one day without the use of internet; surely this was a revolution but for us it’s only the everyday! So why don’t exploit all these opportunities? I think that Trump was just smart, he looked to the new instruments that technology gives to the world and he worked on it. This is what Facebook, Amazon and every website do, silently, every day; they collect data about us, every interest and every data are collected to make a profile of ourselves; therefore it seems that google knows what we like, it really knows our preferences!

And what about our privacy? One day a professor said that, differently from past generations, we just know that someone can abuse of our personal data, it can happen but we are not so scared about it. I think he is right, our generation knows the contraindications and consequences of the usage of internet but we must think that this is a trade-off. If we want that our smartphone does automatically whatever we want we just should accept “the other side of the coin”. Surely we have to take precautions but if we don’t want to risk at all, we don’t have to desire to have a customized world.

    Hey! I’m Alberto!

As all the others in this group I’m studying Management Engineering in Carlo Cattaneo University, and therefore “digital” and Industry 4.0 is part of our courses and lectures. In my opinion “Big Data”, out of the 9 pillars of industry 4.0, is the most tricky and less understandable by nowadays’ companies, especially for the ones that didn’t born digital. I say that because being in possession of records, trends and feedbacks about the process isn’t enough for a company, as it is a quite intangible asset! Everyone knows that these data are supposed to enable better decision and faster intervention on the processes (both operational and business ones), but “having” them is not enough!

In order to fulfill 100% the aim of industry 4.0, companies does not have just to integrate their flow and architecture an infrastructure able to get data along the process, but they need to actually do something out of all these data, otherwise their investment is just wrong. Here it begins the tricky part: having more and more data means that humans are not suppose to analyze them. So how can these information can be elaborated by computers, and on the same time keep the human experience alive? How can companies used to track their flow with giga-Excel files being able to elaborate all these information in a constructive way?

All these question are rhetoric , as we (management “digital” engineers) are supposed in a near future to answer them, in order to help companies to deal with these problems and get the most out of industry 4.0

    Enjoy,

    Alberto

Hi everybody, (you all might know me but I’m presenting myself anyway)

my name is Leonardo, and for the last three and a half years I have been studying Industrial Engineering & Management at LIUC University in Castellanza. Differently from Sofia and Alberto, during the last year of the Bachelor’s program I attended the specialistic path focused on the “Business Services”.

I attended a course called “Business Services Design and Measurement” during which the professor introduced us the wide (and apparently confused) world of Big Data and he briefly showed us some techniques, on a piece of software called “Orange Data Mining”, to handle it/them (I am not sure but the word data should be uncountable, does anybody of you know?). He explained that data became “big” as soon as most of the new digital devices, with sensors installed on them, started to be able to collect data about specific phenomena and store it/them on memory disks. Then, through the IoT technology (Internet of Things), data can be transferred from devices to PCs which are able to compute data. Everyday, terabytes and terabytes of data are stored on servers and cloud platforms. Specialized data analysts (the so-called “Data Scientists) use applicative software to read between the lines in order to discover new specific patterns: this process is called “Data Mining”.

On the US election topic, I agree with Sofia. If Donald Trump’s posts on were really data driven, then we should consider his election campaign as very crafty. Nevertheless, I don’t blame it for that. He was able to identify how the world is becoming digital today and he exploited this opportunity. Nowadays, social media and big data are the two phenomena that are influencing mostly the information spread, and Trump was able to combining them together. For all his life he has been considered as a visionary and the US elections confirmed it.

On what Alberto said, I would reply saying that the technology performances grow very fast. Therefore, I suppose that the increasing amount of data would not be an issue. By the time, people will start to be more and more familiar with the Big Data Phenomenon and data analysis will become a routine process for most of the companies. In addition, data analysis will be more and more structured and standardized, so that data mining will require less time to spend on it to reach targets and goals.

But this is just my opinion, what do you think about it?

    Good morning everyone,

I’d like to briefly introduce myself. I’m Umberto Cisari and I’ve been studying for the past 3 years and half Engineering & Management in LIUC, Castellanza (VA). As well as Leonardo, I attended the last year of the Bachelor program in Business Services, after 6 months of Erasmus experience in the Netherlands. In October i took the degree and now I’m attending the last two years of specialization in Digital Consulting.

I attended “Business Services design and measurement” as well.  What I’ve got from this course is that Big Data is the future, companies in the next years will mainly focus on analytics and not just on the business. Digital transformation, in my opinion, is necessary, as it happened in the past with the two industrial revolutions. “Digitized solutions” is the KPI of the future and it implicates the integration of data collected in order to give a solution for a company problem. The next generation’s managers have to have analytics capabilities which can be helpful to gather more information on your customers and suppliers, and they are useful for finding and solving easily any kind of problem within the company.

About the article, I agree with both Leonardo and Sofia about the use of Big Data by Donald Trump. He could lead a proper campaign because he had the capability to communicate through the social media which are used by everybody, so he reached every voter with his message. He sorrounded himself with experts in analytics is order to perfectly combine the social media and Big Data aspects in his campaign.

Last thing, I want to reply to Leonardo’s question. I agree with you about the growth of technology performances , but technology and big data are directly proportional. I mean, as the technology is improving basically every day, Big Data are getting bigger and bigger. The number of sensors applied on IoT objects is raising exponentially, so the information gathered is measured in Terabytes. I wouldn’t say it will be easier in the future doing analytics, but it will be common in every company having a special division dedicated to Data mining and visualization. New softwares will be integrated but the amount of data will be always bigger and difficult to integrate and evaluate in order to get a proper solution. What do you think about it?

    Hello everyone,

I’m Carmelo and I am another member of the “fabulous” LIUC group.
I couldn’t attend the last meeting in Novara but i heard from my colleagues what were the topics and I’ve found very interesting the start up that has presented its project.
Like the others I’m a former student of Industrial Engineering and I’ve also attended the same courses mentioned by Leonardo and Umberto.
I’ve also done an international experience in The Netherlands for 6 months and it has changed me a lot opening up my mind. There I’ve met people from all over the world and I’ve realized that Italy is just a very very very little part of the world.

Related to the article I’ve just read, I think that Big Data is one of the most powerful tool used by the government and companies nowadays, mainly because in it is stored all the information of the Internet users, and guess what: we are almost 4 billion Internet users all over the world.

People got used to spend their time on social networks exchanging information all the time. The information doesn’t go only through the members who are interested but it is spread out for whoever is interested in it, that could be someone that has bad intentions.
I think that we shouldn’t be impassive to what companies and governments are doing but at the same time I know that we can’t do so much to contrast this phenomena. My advice as internet user is to be at least careful on what we are posting and sharing.

    Hey guys,

I would like to share with you how powerful could be a simple tweet nowadays, providing you an example from one of our discussed man: Donald Trump.

After his election last November, the shares of a lot of companies on the war market grew up significantly: among these companies, Lockheed Martin was probably the one who saw their shares increasing most. Nevertheless, on December 22nd a tweet (probably data driven?) from the new US President turned this situation upside down: he publicly expressed his concerning about the costs for F-35 fighter project, asking Boeing to price-out a comparable aircraft. The shares of Lockheed Martin immediately precipitated, due to the fact that since that moment US Government might not buy their war aircrafts anymore. On the other hand, Trump could have caused this event in order to obtain a huge discount from Lockheed Martin for the F-35 project. This could have been a critical and strategical move to reduce public expenditures, confirming him a real business man.

Do you think there could be any other purpose for this tweet?

I attach an article from theGuardian about this event: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/dec/23/lockheed-f-35-fighter-project-in-doubt-after-trump-tweet-encourages-rival-boeing

    Hi!

I am a firm believer that the power of social media is raising up, relating to the fact that it has a world wide range, so a simple tweet can reach more people and in a faster way than a simple speech in front of the camera. Trump noticed this trend and used it as a weapon during his whole campaign, speaking directly to his voters through his tweets.

Regarding your question @leo-grillo, I reckon Trump wanted to play a kind of “Double-Game”. He is a huge business man, he built an Empire in the last years, so he perfectly knows how to deal with this kind of things. I do reckon Trump wants to make Lockheed Martin reduced the price for F-35 project and he is not scared to lose its supply. Boeing hasn’t enough tools to face Lockheed Martin competition, so its aircraft will not be at the same level as F-35. Basically Trump has nothing to lose and Lockheed Martin could disappear if this project might fails. Trump did a really good move, forcing Lockheed Martin to make a choice: loosing its Business with the failure of the project, or decreasing the price of his aircraft in order to satisfy Trump condition and to keep its partneriship with US force.

Hey all, a point of next steps.

The 4 Forum from Torino, Novara, Castellanza (LIUC) and Milano are espressing something more than 30 attendees , high quality…pratically they could fill it up a SVST 🙂

I have already received 10 cv…deadline March 31. Now we start your help to find sponsors for the Tour by our https://techscoutsv.com  initiative.

Born in 2013 , permitted to many Alumni to transform the SVST in a Tech and Business scouting project  for italian SME’s and startups that want to open to the Silicon Valley Ecosystem.

Techscout consists in  attending  the Tour and remain in SV from 1 week more to up 3 months from  yr arrival for SVST ( according to 3 month ESTA Visa duration) to do a TECH or business scouting for one or more companies that cover your costs. The coverage could be from the minimum (1500 Euro to cover  SVST inscription fee, and stay 1 week only;  to 6-8000 Euro, to stay 3 months). It’s just a coverage of expenses but a huge opportunity for you. Who did it ( many guys and girls) is now startupper or working in Italy or abroad.

One of the best case is Carola Pescio Canale ( Carola PC on facebook) that will be speaker via skype in Novara, Fondazione Novara Sviluppo , March 30, 5-7 pm.( see Novara Forum)

Join if you can. She, 26, biz grad,  has now her second job in Silicon Valley

How we promote this for you? ( you can do also by yourself , by personal or University contacts or sponsorship)

1 You as a group make your Crowdfunding Project. We did 4 in the last 4 years from UNI Torino selected students. Some promoter will talk at the Torino Conference to be held on Monday 27 3-5 pm- Join if u can (see Torino Forum).  Obviously one reward for a company that put money on it, could be a Tech Scouting project

2 Join the Facebook Group Italian Start up Scene. I will make a post in the next days to promote you all for the Tech Scouting Project. In this case the target could be the italian Start up interested to Silicon Valley. We will give the direct contact with you to the Italian Start up interested: they will choose autonomously the right man or woman for the job, among you, according to the skills required for their goal.

As you understand , now proactivity from your side is a must, to reach the goal of SVST!

    Hey everyone!

First of all I want to share some highlight about yesterday’s conference in Novara:

Filippo Arrigoni, as a startup consultant, talked about his experience in his early life, and about is SVST. He told us that the main effect that SV has on people life is to “broaden their mind”, and to teach that failing is just part of achieving your personal goals.

Filippo then introduced 4 of his main projects: Inovaria, Frendy Energy, a medical-gel and an innovative wifi-lighting solution.

Inovaria is a startup born in University of Novara, in the faculty of Medicine, and its business is the “Medicine of Disaster”. With that term they include all the worst events Earth could face: earthquakes, floods and even terroristic attacks. Inovaria has developed some software able to simulate all these situations in order to train people and enable them in advance.

I consider this idea remarkable: both from a business and ethic perspective! For ages scientists had study how to foresee the natural events, in order to “be ready” when they occur . What Inovaria does is a step forward: it optimize (and in a way regulate, define some gold standards) how the emergencies are faced, managed and contained. Therefore on the ethic and social level has a huge impact as it’s a tool for saving lives; on the business side their offer would always has high demand.

[… some other consideration I’ve discussed with @umbecisa about the other projects he might want to share…]

Then Filippo explained us what he actually does for startups, and gave us some data about the success of startups worldwide.

I just tell you that the 90% of startups fail, and link a Forbes article about that, what do you @sparakermens @leo-grillo @sofiasilvia and @paolomarenco think is the reason?

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilpatel/2015/01/16/90-of-startups-will-fail-heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-10/#733443766792

    @paolomarenco
I’m going to translate my CV asap, thank you for the opportunity. More or less, when do we know if we are selected or no? (As we need to organize some conferences with some local companies in order to “sell” future internship for sponsorship)

    Thank you,

Hope you’ll enjoy my brutal report 🙂

    Alberto
