    HI guys,

Regarding Luca’s topic I would like to say that I share the line of thinking of Edoardo and Stefano, but I also agree with some of you.

In my opinion, China offers without any doubts a lot of possibilities for a business man who wants to create or maybe just develop his start up. As Linda said, It’s an economically growing nations, so they have great investment and good innovations, but it’s all depend on the market in which you operate.

Personally if I had to start a new business and a new start up I would choose Europe, there’s so much to take advantage of, and moreover the conference of Thursday gave me a lot to think about. Emilio and Antonella completely reversed my idea about some things; I already knew some aspects that they told us about, but listening their direct testimony is different, and I understood there are so much factors to considerate before to move out – not only the investment possibilities – and the different culture is just one of these, but also one of more important. Approaching with Asian world it’s quite difficult from what I heard, not only because of the language, but also because they have a lot of different uses that we can’t even imagine, maybe it’s sufficient get used to this, but surely must be found a local correspondent, especially at the beginning.

A dual company is a good solutions in my opinion, taking financial funding opportunities outside the EU, but maintaining the production in our own country. We have a good market after all, a good legal regulation which protects the intellectual property and also a different way to deal and approach new ideas (and it’s not all so granted, the legal aspect is very important in each part of our lives). As already said it’s a world of sharks, and due to the fact that they are bigger, they’re also more used to see a business growing and then failing so fast, I think that especially for someone who is at the beginning it’s not so easy. The risk is a part of the game, but the consequences are not always positives.

Concluding I would like to add that I really love to travel, discovering new cultures and learning from them, the World is big and beautiful, but I also love my country and I believe it can offers a lot. Working and living in a very different environment is another thing, and instead of just leaving we must be smart enough to take inspiration from other countries and importing a winning business strategy, always maintaining our values and skills; there are a lot of fields where we’re excellent in!

Let me know your opinion and have a nice day!

    Hi everybody,

I totally agree with you Stefano!

There are a lot of systems, ideas and efforts from many people and organizations that I admire a lot, but trying to solve the problem at the source is surely a better solution in my opinion. We can clean all this mess but if we don’t severely change our attitude we will kill the World in which we live and all his amazing things.

I consider the last measure of Europe a big achievement, and I really hope to see some progress, but there’s still a lot to do to fix the situation once for all. Also I expect that all this technology and innovation could help us, in order to really change something and makes the difference for our future, because I don’t want to imagine a day to the beach with my hypothetical kids surrounded by plastic and garbage as if it were normal! This idea really makes me sad and upset, like the fact that a lot of animals risk to disappear in just few years, and all because of human race and his indifference and negligence.

By the way, I consider the project mentioned by Luca very interesting. I checked out and saw their website and it’s quite amazing to see how many things you can create with plastic products; to recycle is a very useful thing, and this non-profit project is a great example of it, especially because everyone can do something in his own way. Still, I consider that a better solution is to stop using plastic as material in everything and starting to replace it – wherever it’s possible – with something else, like others materials more innovative and less dangerous for the environment and for us. There are a lot of materials less known such as some polymer produced by bacterial fermentation of agricultural waste or food waste. It’s possible using also keratin and cellulose, seaweed, silk and wool, even the milk! And it’s all biodegradable faster.

To answering at Luca’s question, It’s difficult to explain in a post, but personally to turning this project in a plastic recycling business maybe I would start creating an app that says to users where’s the plastic collection point closer to you, in order to allow an immediate collect of the plastic products to the workspaces by everybody. Furthermore the app could give the opportunity to directly choose the desired object (colour, shape, texture etc.) and the place to take it, so that would be easier for who sell and who buy (in addition to the “bazar” online). This is just an example and there’s more to say.

What do you think guys? What are your ideas? Let me know!

    Good morning everyone!

Thanks Sara for the article,it’s very interesting! Few months ago I read about a similar idea, in fact there’s also a machine, the Ocean Array Cleanup, created by the ong “The Ocean Cleanup”. The system consists of a chain of two kilometers-long floating barriers, which collects plastic waste from the sea by exploiting ocean currents, and once a month a boat collects the waste in the central part of the system. It’s also quite smart in my opinion, because it doesn’t need some energy to work! For its first use they chose to install the system in the bay of San Francisco for a test, and then they moved it in order to clean the Pacific Trash Vortex (a huge accumulation of floating garbage, composed by 80.000 tonne of plastic, located in the Pacific Ocean). If the structure will work, the intention is to install more, about other 60, with the big wish to pick up the 90% of plastic material within the 2040!

I think it’s a great idea, especially because the plastic in the ocean it’s a danger every minute it pass, not only for the animals in the sea but also for us! Some researchers of the Austrian Environment Agency have found microplastic particles in the intestines of some people, this because the plastic in the long run turns into very tiny pieces, until it reaches us evidently.

Finally, last summer in Croatia I saw too, like Benedetta, some machines to recycle bottles in the supermarkets. It’s a good idea in my opinion, if people don’t understand by theirself the importance to use trash cans properly, maybe giving them a little incentive could works and leads good results. There are a lot of  new system to overcome the problem of pollution in the World, the only thing to always helps is the willingness.

Look at this new idea to reduce greenhouse gas emissions:  https://www.repubblica.it/ambiente/2018/10/23/news/portogallo_una_centrale_eolica_galleggiante_da_25_mw-209774885/?ref=fbpa

Just to conclude I would like to express my happiness for the approval of the EU Parliament to abolish within the 2021 the use and sale of single-use plastic products (it’s the 70% of marine trash)! Now it needs the final confirmation from the meeting between the representatives of the European Council and the Commission.

    What do you think?

Have a nice Sunday (despite the rain)!

Hi guys! How are you? Sorry for the absence but I had some university’s stuff to do.

I agree with the beginning part of Selene’s post, in fact the possible scenarios of this situation are three, and I think that being part or not of the single market will have consequences, but It’s still hard to define exactly the situation. I also agree with Linda, if there’s a good ecosystem the support from the institutions is granted, and young entrepreneurs are financed in their projects.

Surely having a favorable regulation, which gives greater incentives to venture capitals investments could be a step forward, but I consider that also trading in a single European market with easier connections has its big advantages, both for European startuppers and companies in general. Maybe for the moment the number of start-ups in UK is still high, but as already mentioned, Paris is becoming a not insignificant city in which could born and grow a new startup. Also the French Government is joining the progress by offering license programs for French startups and funding initiatives for startups only, because there’s the willingness to make France a startup nation. Berlin and Stockholm are also excellent cities for starting a new project, this because there’s efficiency and a good business climate, thanks to a supportive Government and by a look to the future. All these mentioned cities are perfect for the nascent startups and international companies. There are a lot of young people, the quality of life is very good and education is excellent, so the system is attractive and creates a brilliant workforce (moreover it seems that even Denmark is one of the three happier countries in EU, together with Finland and Norway). It’s necessary a “fertile ground” to grow, and It’s created by a lot of factors in my opinion.

By the way it needs to distinguish, because a scale-up doesn’t need a headquarter, so it’s easier create its own international expansion and business, there’s a dematerialisation, and maybe for this type of business Brexit in its hard definition won’t be a big deal, and London probably will continue to be relevant for the world of tech and innovation (maybe not the first in long-term). Scale-ups are more focused on the city and the ideas, and they invest in something or someone they believe in. Anyhow the ecosystem makes always the difference, and Silicon Valley is the perfect example of it! A dynamic place with dynamic people will surely produce better results (and also for this I’m really really curious to see it personally, I wish to have the opportunity to learn and take inspiration from it).

Connecting to this I would like to add that I considered Max Brigonzi’s speech on Tuesday so instructive, he was full of energy, I learned some new things and I convinced myself even more about the importance for Italy to catch up. We have to believe in all of this, without too much brain drain. In our country we have a lot of potential in my opinion, but unfortunately there’s still too much fear to invest, in new ideas new projects new people and especially in young people! I mean, we don’t notice that University and education in particular have a big role on it, we students could have an importance for the evolution of our country, because we are more inclined to risk and venture capitals are at the base of startups. It needs to try if it worth it, and “if you never try you’ll never know”.

Finally, a very interesting thing I found is that ANGI (National Association Young Innovators) opened his first seat in Paris, in order to connect young Italian and French innovators, promoting intercultural exchange and investment, and also creating a possible dialogue with business, government and university institutions. But most important thing, this was possible thanks to the partnership with the french business incubator “Why Not Factory”. I think this is a great new opportunity for young people and for the innovation’s ecosystem in Italy and EU.

What do you think about it? (and sorry for the really long post ahaha)

    Have a nice day!

    Hi Linda and hi everyone,

Personally, like you, I prefer the IOS’ operating system, I tried once to use a tablet with Android but it was quite complicated for me. I know that most of the people which use electronic devices, once starting with an operating system, rarely will change; I never had a telephone with Android and I think I’ll never have. By the way I have to admit, in favor of Android, that Apple is like a “private club”, because there’s a specific way to upload file, music or photos on IPhone, there are some things you can only do with people who use IOS, there also a dedicated cable and special headphones like airpods! But it’s a choice, good or bad that is.

I agree with you about the fact that Android will surely be in a disadvantageous position, but as Benedetta said, if there is something we can’t do without maybe it’s right to pay, and furthermore, handset producers will be able to choose between three different options. From the 29th October the manufacturers will have the possibility to sell phones with open-source version (free and without Play Store), a basic package with apps like Gmail, YouTube or Maps except Chrome (but only with a specific license), and finally the actual offer for free.

There’s also to say that Apple devices aren’t so cheap, so I think that who prefers to use a specific operating system will probably pay in every case to have it. Phone it’s something we use every day, and I don’t want to go mad every second for a system I don’t like.

In conclusion this is not surely the first time that Google is fined and has issues with the law , like other famous companies (just today has emerged that Ebay sued Amazon for a supposed not politically correct behavior with a campaign to poach sellers), this just to remind that competition law is something really important, especially in business like these.

Also, Google appealed the European Commission’s decision, so if the big company will prevail – but we’ll know within a few years – it could revert to bundling its free services.

    Have a good day!

    Hello guys,

I totally agree with Marianna about the fact that each country, if too dependent on military for cybersecurity risks to reduce the incentives for private companies – specialized in solving this trouble – to find some alternatives solutions and long-term’s security system.

About the recent Chinese computer attack I consider Valentina’s link interesting, and I would like to add that just Apple has apologized to Chinese users; in fact some customers have seen their Apple IDs stolen from hackers. This fact caused inconvenience to some customers (but “just a small number of users’ accounts” said the Company) by these phishing scam, which took some account details from people. Apple said that users affected were not using two-factor authentication, as if only this thing could have avoid the thefts, I have  to say!

They said that hackers didn’t steal so much account, but it seems that at one point the scam was too extended to induce Apple to close temporarily some stores, because there was a big quantity of fraudulent warranty claims. This let me think that maybe the number of account stolen wasn’t  so little.

In conclusion, I would like to create a <b>new topic:</b> what do you think about the new Google’s announce to start charging handset producers to install Gmail, Google Maps and other popular applications for Android in the EU? This is a consequence to the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) about online privacy adopted in our countries from the 25th May. Ever more companies to do their business in Europe are adding new data-protection policies, in order to restrict and reduce how people are traced across the internet.

In the US also some members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission are speaking more favorably of stricter supervisions of online platforms like Facebook and Google.

    Hi everyone,

Regarding Trump’s new strategy, this is quite similar to other two documents, already developed; one regulated by Obama in 2009 (Cyberspace Policy Review) and another one by Bush in 2003 (National strategy to secure cyberspace), all with the purpose to solve and fight the problem of cyberattacks, through the increase of critical infrastructure and the help of private sectors, creating a system to share information about the possible threats of the Web.

I consider, although, the process of consensus too much important to be eliminated, because some regulations exist precisely to protect ourselves and our personal data. I mean, the process is quite slow, often it’s like that with the application of the law, but it gives the time to Governments to verify the source of the cyberattack, becoming more experts to face the trouble; hackers often act on political and economic websites using third-party devices, also from different countries, so it becomes more difficult find who was behind the attack itself.

Acting in a reckless and impulsive way like that of this new strategy is a risk, because this could have an opposite effect, triggering new attacks instead to stop them. In fact there’s no prove or evidence that preventives, unwise and offensives actions help to reduce this problem, so attack before being attacked doesn’t create a deterrent effect, but it could cause just retaliatory breaches.

Concluding, in my opinion a better strategy should focus on more security computer’s system, also investing money, time and energy in order  to testing periodically their power to avoid attacks online,  and to making continuous updates.

    Good evening guys!

Personally I share Benedetta’s idea of introducing digital-privacy classes in schools (also for the smallest children), about the risks that can be encountered on the Web. In high school one day some postal police’s members came in class to talk to us about some real events happened to people, and informing us about all the risks of the network; I was lucky enough to already know most of the things they explained, because in my family we talked about it several times and I was aware, but sometimes hearing real events can have a stronger impact.
I realize every day more that times are changing, and I also see it with my little cousin, she is 12 years old and in her class all students already have Instagram or Facebook! The timing on the use of technological devices is very different compared to when I (and you I suppose) was a child, and I think this is not so good, because technology is a wonderful and useful thing, as dangerous and risky if used by whom are not totally informed and aware of the possible uses and consequences. As Luca wrote the idea to see all my personal data stolen scares me a lot, identity theft in my opinion is a very serious thing for those who are victims.
As Stefano wrote, I consider that the 1.5 million fine made to Facebook is correct, but the control on the Internet should certainly be increase, going to study systems that can be able to deal also with the best hackers. In fact this problem concerns our most important personal information, but also economic and political information. As already mentioned, thefts have always been existed, and forever they’ll be, but there should be a whole knowledge about this topic, which – especially for children – must definitely start from the family and school, but without forgetting that all of us is at risk at any time. Surely setting up private profiles can already be helpful.

Did you also know that in London are currently taking place the European Cybersecurity Championships? They started the 14th of october and they will end tomorrow.

Connected to this I leave you this link, tell me what you think about it.

    Good morning everyone!

I found very interesting the link posted by Edoardo about the comparison between the effects caused by the rise of the global average temperature of 1.5 degrees or 2 degrees, in fact even just half a degree of difference may seem little, but it would have a great impact on the flora and fauna of the world, and especially on the health and the fate of tens of millions of people.

I thank Luca for the topic, because I personally care a lot about the environment and nature, not only about climate change, but also about everything related to pollution and hunting, and to all acts of violence and hatred caused by man against animals and others human beings.

I’m extremely convinced, as Stefano has already written, that each of us should do something about this problem every day to take care of the world in which we live, and this also applies to the damage that is causing the plastic, and the pollution of the environment in general.

The Planet Earth is more than 4 billion years old, while we exist from only about 5 million! The impact of greenhouse gases is destructive, and from my point of view the decision to permanently abolish the use of carbon and other fossil fuels should involve all the states of the world, especially the biggest ones, because their impact is major and the efforts made by one are likely to be thwarted by the negligence of everyone else. Wherever possible we must always prefer the use of renewable energy.

One program that I think we need to be very proud of is the EU ETS (Emissions Trading System), which is the first world’s international emission trading system, as well as the broadest, and it currently handles over three quarters of international carbon trade.
The gases concerned are CO2, nitric oxide and perfluorocarbons (PFC deriving from aluminum production), involving companies that produce, for example, electricity and heat, industrial sectors with a high energy intensity and also civil aviation.
This system sets a limit to the total amount of some greenhouse gases that can be emitted by the factories that are part of the system, which is then reduced from year to year to decrease total emissions. Keeping the amount within this limit, companies receive or buy emission percentage, which they can also exchange, and the total number limitation ensures that the available share have a value.

Each year companies must then return a number of percentage that are sufficient to cover their emissions, otherwise they will be fined, and if a company reduces its emissions, it can keep unused quotas to cover future needs, or sell them to companies that have finished them. This program predicts that in 2020 emissions will be 21% lower than in 2005, and in 2030 they will be 43% lower.

I think this is an example of what can be done concretely in order to have visible results in a short time and on what is now an important and urgent issue; this could also be a starting point for other world states, if only there was the determination of everyone to act. Climate change is not just science fiction, and unfortunately the interest of many companies, which is not have some restrictions, prevails over the health of the world and people, as we can also see from deforestation (often illegal, which has an affair of almost 150 billion dollars annually). This automatically leads to exploitation of the territories involved, and collateral damage to the affected flora and fauna, and a huge example is the risk of the extinction of the orangutan, which sees its territory threatened by the construction of buildings and industrial crops, including palm oil at the top. Not to mention those killed by poachers – hired by the same industrial companies – or sold on the black market.

From my point of view we live like in a vicious circle, the human race has increased dramatically in a short time, and is expected to continue to do it, and as a result the production grows disproportionately, going to cause damage of all kinds, like those mentioned above; but climate change also causes severe climate events, which in their turn destroy and build and produce again.

Returning briefly to the topic about Trump, just recently he announced, following the disasters caused by the hurricane Michael in Florida: “I think something’s happening. It’s change back again. I do not think it’s a hoax. I think there’s probably a difference. But I do not know that it’s manmade. I will say this: I do not want to give trillions and trillions of dollars. I do not want to lose millions and millions of jobs”.

Although he did not radically change his mind, the President said something slightly different from the past, but public opinion claims it’s a political move ahead of the upcoming mid-term elections scheduled for the 6th of November. These concern the United States Congress (Senate and House of Representatives) but they are just an indication about the work done in these two years by the President of the USA, and the possible political choices of the next two (even Obama talked about the fact of conscious vote in the congressional elections).

What do you think about it? Have a nice day!

    Hi guys!

As well as some of you, I was quite worried when I read about Trump’s victory as President, because the United States plays a big role in the World, both economically and politically, but not only (like Luca wrote Hillary Clinton was not much better than him).
I personally have no particular respect for him, and although he remains coherent with his policy of “America first”, placing the States at the center of his economic and industrial actions, I think that especially in the last year there has been a climate of strong disagreement in the US with regard to its initiatives.
We are not there and therefore I think it’s difficult to have a clear idea of what happen, but I find very controversial his trade war against China and Europe, and for several months this has given rise to strong oppositions against him.

The States, from my point of view, should decrease their trade deficit towards China (the export of China in the US is around 500 billion dollars, with a surplus compared to the US of about 375 billion), and furthermore this policy of strong protectionism could have negative effects on the United States themselves.

As Giovanni wrote, the investment in infrastructure made by Trump could lead to new jobs, even for the less educated, but the Tax Reform approved by Trump could enrich even more the rich and impoverish those who are worse, due to the fact that the part concerning individuals is temporary, and should expire in 2025 (it’s not allowed that certain tax measures contribute permanently to the increase in public debt after ten years).
Another important consequence of the vote of the Congress was the extension of oil and gas extraction permits in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a large natural area in Alaska, which has existed since the 1960 and which, together with other natural places, is at high risk (even if before acting the Interior Minister will carry out checks and studies on the environmental impact, which will certainly lead to legal and political clashes).

This makes me connect just to a topic very dear to me, and to the quote of Elon Musk last year about the decision of the USA to quit the Paris Agreement on Climate Change: “I am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world”, in an era in which to act immediately to save the Planet is more urgent than ever. Just his tweet found strong support among other important people of the Silicon Valley, including Tim cook, Sundar Pichai and Jack Dorsey, founder of the same Twitter.

And what do you think? Do you agree? Did you also know about the possible non-compliance of the international provisions of the US tax reform with the rules of the WTO and the double taxation conventions? I’m curious about your opinions.

I leave this article, which I found quite interesting (although it’s an article a few month ago):

    Hi everybody!

My name is Eunice, I’m 23 years old and I’m attending my fifth and last year at UPO as a law student.

I’m a very curious person, determined and ambitious. I love traveling and I’m interested in culture, from art to technology. I’m constantly looking for new goals and motivations in my life, also with the belief that every day there’s something new to live, learn and experience.

I recently spent five months in France, thanks to the Erasmus program, and in addition to improve my language skills (in english and french) I had the unique opportunity to live in an international cultural context, in which to be open minded and be able to adapt is a must.

I read about the SVST 2019 and it seemed like a joke to me, i think it’s an incredible possibility! I would really have the chance to visit the “cradle of innovation”, it would be so inspiring for me to see how different ideas and technologies are created every day, just in a single place. I think it also could be a great moment to better understand what to do in our future.

I attended the yesterday’s conference about Digital transformation, and also for me – like most of you – was interesting and inspirational! There were a lot of useful advices in the stories of the speakers, and like Federico I think it’s important to be informed about the power of technology and support its progress, without completely omit the past and the tradition; it’s all precious to give a unique value at the objet of own work.

I also share the opinion of Martina, “it is us humans to make a difference, not machines”, because in my opinion we are thinking and feeling beings, and this is always be a step further. We have to take advantage from the current change, it is convenient for the daily life and especially for the work (as we heard yesterday), but I believe that machines will never replace a real person. This can be both positive and negative, it depends on the field of application.

Finally I fully agree with Stefano and Matilde about the sad side of this era, we are surrounded by technology in every aspect of our lives, but sometimes we forget that keep in touch with the real world is the more important thing.

I hope to read many other interesting opinions of you guys, and recover the conversations I lost previously!

    Have a nice weekend,

    Eunice Curreri
